In Loving Memory Of Magdalene Olivia Peddie (1919 - 1999)

Granddad often referred to grandma as Maggie which was a term of endearment. He’s no longer here for me to ask so I came up with the list above to try and capture the meaning behind the name. Having spent all my childhood and most of my teen years with them I believe the words chosen for each letter of 'Maggie' was very much how granddad was thinking of her.

It is ironic that ‘Gentle’ and ‘Giving’ should occupy the centre of this name as these were two of grandma's main characteristics. She was a very gentle person and so she made a perfect nurse whenever we were ill. She was also a very kind and giving person so whenever we had visitors they would always leave with something in their hands and a smile on their face. If anyone came to visit and had a lot on their mind, they would leave after a snack and a chat, feeling much better than when they came (that was a special gift she had where her words were always comforting).

We had plenty of fruit trees and so, granny would walk and talk with you, heading towards the tree of whichever fruit was in season.  And before you knew it! There would be sounds of laughter coming towards the house.  After the visitors were gone, she would often start to hum a song and soon there would be a 'praise and worship' team in our yard (made up of grandma and all the grandchildren) with an audience of one – my granddad. That was probably due to the fact that grandma was part of the choir and often used phrases from songs in discussions and so the tune would linger on. Once we recognised the tune we would all join in.

The choruses below were some of grandma’s favourite. She sung them with such conviction that it often felt like we were in church, listening to a sermon being delivered. Now that I am grown, I understand that those songs were personal testimonies that she was delivering. Often, we would join in with her and we would dance in a circle or just sit on the veranda clapping and stomping away.

If you know these songs I hope you won't refuse the urge to give a nod of the head and a shake of the leg.

Song #

(Chorus) Lyrics
1.I have decided to follow Jesus (x3)
No turning back, no turning back
You can have the whole world but give me Jesus (x3)
No turning back, no turning back
The cross before me, the world behind me (x3)
No turning back, no turning back
2.I’ve got my mind made up
And I won’t turn back
`cos I want to see my Jesus someday
(repeat)
3.Daniel’s God, surely will deliver x2
And if you only look to him by faith
Daniel’s God, surely will deliver
4.I love that man, from Galilee
For he has done so very much for me
He has taken all my sins
And let the Holy Ghost within
I love that man, that man from Galilee
5.Reach out and touch the Lord, as He passes by
You’ll find he’s not too busy, to hear your hearts cry
He’s passing by this moment, your needs to supply
Reach out and touch the Lord , as He passes by
6.Jesus. He is a way maker*
7.Closer than a brother, my Jesus is to me
He’s my dearest friend, in everything I need
He’s my rock, my shield and hiding place
Closer than a brother, Jesus is to me
8.All the way to Calvary
He went for me (x2)
All the way to Calvary
He went for me
And now he sets me free

Although, I have
 so many, many sins
Jesus washed them all away
And He pardoned me
(repeat)
9.A little more oil in my lamp, keeps it burning
A little more oil in my lamp, I pray
A little more oil in my lamp, keeps it burning
Keeps it burning `till the break of day
10.Soon and very soon, we are going to see the king (x3)
Halleluiah, halleluiah we are going to see the King

These songs were some of the tools used to aid grandma’s ministry. They certainly made a lasting impression on me and now they minister to my heart.  So even though she is no longer physically present in my life, her life has been an example to me and she continues to teach me through the things that she has said and done (including these songs). Such memories I will always hold dear. Her memory truly lives on.
