'EMANCIPATE YOURSELVES FROM MENTAL SLAVERY'
BY: Janice S Ramkissoon

We have such fighting power that we can utilise in a mighty positive way, yet we allow ourselves to get caught in a trap (that vicious circle of us versus them) wasting energy on negativity. “I will take vengeance, I will pay back, says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).

We will not solve the problem by casting stones at each other. The answer lies within our own education. Our ancestors died fighting the struggle to give us a better future. They opened doors for us which otherwise would still be closed today. Too many of us are living behind closed doors instead of stepping out and accessing those opportunities created for us. Fear not the evil one who would have you feel inferior and keep you mentally enslaved. “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My [God’s] purpose is to give life in all its fullness” (John 10:10).

Celebrating our culture: October is Black History Month in the UK. The title in itself tells us that we still have unopened doors. In order to open up more doors to allow the generations that follows to have a future better than this one, we need to use this time to access information that normally, are not readily available to us. With this information we need to educate ourselves and others. The month is about celebrating our culture, our history, our achievements; giving our younger generation a taste of their history which may trigger self study/exploration throughout the year. In turn, this will allow them the knowledge and understanding of their past:

   Giving them confidence to walk into the future;

   Making them more proud of their ancestry;

   Be proud of who they are;

   Be proud to hold their heads high; and

   Be confident that they can achieve.

Now let’s cease the negativities and focus on celebrating our rich culture and lets see more positive note to the achievements that may pave the way forward. Take the advice of the late Robert Nester Marley and emancipate ourselves from mental slavery for ‘none but ourselves can free our minds’.

God did not give us a spirit of fear, that’s the devil’s hold on us. Let us claim our boldness in Christ and receive the life of abundance promised to us. So walk in authority as Donnie McClurkin reminds us and live life without apology for you belong.
