DISQUALIFYING THE 'IF' FACTOR
By Janice Ramkissoon
I thought about gran and wished I had spent more time with her.
If only I knew forever would be gone two decades into growth. I would sit beside you in church rather than with friends because it was so cool to be in with the crowd. But then I realised that the time away from you was spent living out what you had taught me. Cementing relationships and making new friends. Making others feel welcome and belonged. I grew to understand that God places you where you ought to be. So when I wasn’t with you I was carrying out his will elsewhere.
I think back on my past and wonder: "What if things were different? What if the choices I made were different?" Travelling to a different country and leaving loved ones behind; broken ties; losing friends along the way. Then I remembered: “If God takes you to it, He will bring you through it”, “Some friends come and go and some make a lasting treasure”. In every situation I have been through, I have seen God at work and so disqualify the ‘if’ factor, for to Him – my here and now matters.
